Keep your kit accessible and organized

Keep your emergency supplies organized in clear plastic bags or containers so you can easily find what you need in a crisis. Make sure all household members know where the kit is located.

Check and rotate supplies twice a year

Use the spring and fall time changes as your reminder to check and rotate your supplies:

Check expiry dates on:

  • Perishable food
  • Water
  • Medications
  • Insurance documents
  • Credit cards
  • Identification documents

Replace supplies that have expired:

  • Non-perishable food: replace once a year
  • Water in vehicle kits: replace every 6 months (store in plastic bottles that won't break if frozen)

Seasonal updates

Add items to your kit based on the season:

Spring/Summer:

  • Rain jacket
  • Umbrella
  • Bug spray
  • Waterproof footwear
  • Sunscreen
  • Hats
  • Fan

Fall/Winter:

  • Warm clothing
  • Heat packs
  • Candle and lighter
  • Extra batteries
  • Gloves
  • Socks
  • Ice grippers
  • Portable shovel
  • Heat packs

Keep your kit current

Update your emergency kit and documents whenever there are changes in your household, such as new family members, new medications, address changes, or new contact information.
