Important pet documents
Keep copies of:
- Vaccination records (especially rabies) — required by many emergency shelters
- Microchip registration number and proof — helps reunite you with your pet if separated
- Identification (collar tags with current phone number)
- Medical records and medication information
Emergency pet kit essentials
- Carriers or crates — essential for transport during evacuation
- Leashes and harnesses — keep pets secure and under control
- Food and water — enough for at least 3 days (store as you would for yourself)
- Bowls and supplies for feeding and water
- Medications with dosing information
- First-aid kit suitable for your pet
Pet-friendly shelter planning
Not all emergency shelters accept pets. During an evacuation:
- Contact shelters in advance to ask about pet policies
- Identify a pet-friendly hotel or boarding facility outside your area
- Ask friends or family if they can house your pets temporarily
- Register your pet with your local animal services or shelter
