What the Government of Canada recommends
The Government of Canada recommends storing:
- Toilet paper for 3+ days
- Hand wipes or soap and water for cleaning
- Hand sanitizer (alcohol-based) for when water is not available
Why this matters
Without proper sanitation, illness and infection spread quickly. A 72-hour supply prevents reliance on utilities (water, sewer) that may not work during emergencies.
What to buy
- Rolls of toilet paper
- Wet wipes or paper towels
- Hand sanitizer (60% alcohol or higher)
- Soap (bar or liquid) if water is available
- Garbage bags for waste disposal
Storage tips
- Keep supplies in a dry, accessible place
- Rotate and check expiry dates annually
- Wet wipes dry out; keep containers sealed
- Store extra rolls to have backup
For bucket-toilet guidance
